Jacinda Ardern, Labour Government leader, has pledged to come down on lenders exploiting consumers who live in poverty. In 2014, the New Zealand government passed a law that imposes restrictions on predatory lending practices. These laws were created to ensure that loan sharks do not impose extreme hardships and penalties on those who borrow from them. They must also make the cost of their loans absolutely clear to their borrowers. However, despite the new law, the New Zealand government continues to fight on consumers’ behalf to put an end to the activities of loan sharks.
